Chopped Italian Sandwich

The chopped Italian sandwich is a viral trend and the perfect way to turn salami, cheese, and fridge vegetables into a delicious meal in just 15 minutes.

Chopped Italian Sandwich
Some recipes are born from viral trends, others from pure practical necessity — using up whatever is sitting in the fridge. The chopped Italian sandwich is both at once. When the "chopped sandwich" trend swept the internet a few years ago, practically the whole world fell for it. Why? Because it works. Because it's fast. And because it's endlessly adaptable. You open the fridge, see what you have — vegetables, deli meats, cheese, pickled things — pick combinations that work together, chop everything up, stuff it into a roll, and you're done.

What is a Chopped Italian Sandwich and Why Is It Great for Using Up Leftovers?

The chopped Italian sandwich is a technique where all the filling ingredients — meat, cheese, vegetables, herbs, and sauces — are chopped together on a cutting board and then mixed into one flavourful filling. The result is a sandwich where every single bite contains all the flavours at once.

It's also one of those recipes where the ingredients are completely flexible. No salami? Use prosciutto or cooked chicken. No chilli? Throw in some olives or capers. Sounds simple? It is simple. And that's exactly the charm.

Top 3 tips and tricks

Sledite tem trem nasvetom, da bo priprava še bolj enostavna.

  1. Choose ingredients with different textures. For example: cooked ham and dry salami, or a fresh crunchy cucumber and a juicy tomato. When we chop everything together, we get a great texture that comes together really well as a whole. The pieces should be about half a centimeter in size.

  2. The right choice of roll is half the success. For a chopped sandwich, you don’t need special bread — but it’s still worth paying attention. The bread needs to be firm enough to hold the juicy filling. Žito’s protein roll is an excellent choice: a moderately crispy crust, a soft center, and just the right size.

  3. The ratio between filling and bread. One of the most common mistakes with sandwiches is not enough filling. With a chopped sandwich, the motto is “more is more” — the filling should be visibly piled on. Several spoonfuls of sandwich filling are the minimum standard. The filling should slightly spill over the edge.

Storing

Basically, a chopped sandwich should be fresh, and this should also be kept in mind when storing it. We don’t store the whole sandwich, but we can store the filling.

Store the filling without the bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 24 hours, but bear in mind that by the next day it will be a little “wetter” because of the vegetables and mayonnaise. Mix well before using and, if needed, add a drop of olive oil.

Pro tip for making it ahead: To prepare a sandwich in advance for a trip, work, or a snack, chop the firmer ingredients in the evening — salami, cheese, onion — without mayonnaise, and store them separately. In the morning, add the fresh vegetables, mayonnaise, and oregano, mix, and assemble the sandwich.
